8 Tips for Styling your Dining Room

Whether you’re hosting a holiday dinner party or gathering around the table for a weeknight meal with the family, the dining room is where people come together. It's where you can show off your individual style.

Here are eight tips on styling the perfect dining room.

French Accents

Traditional and antique pieces, like these vintage French chairs, can feel intimidating when grouped together. But you can avoid this and maintain a fresh and welcoming look with various neutrals (whites, creams, and sage green) sprinkled throughout the space and accented with a single bit of hanging bling. Like this mirror below!

Colour

If you love one bold color, go for it, but keep the competition in check. Too many colours or patterns do not a good look make!

By sticking with a single colour on a wall and the accessories such as the examples below, the whole effect is easy on the eyes.

Rustic Farmhouse Style

Clean walls, airy window treatments, and a whitewashed farmhouse-style table are perfect for a light-filled room with a view. Keep the whole look neat and tied together with the right amount of texture, which can be introduced with a set of rustic chairs, a funky industrial style shelf, art prints in rustic frames (Sign up at the bottom of this post to get a free wine print worth $30!), and bright neutral colours combined with rustic (like these candles!) for the table decorations.

Update Lighting

A quick and often cheap way to upgrade and change the look of your dining space is to change the lighting. It can be as easy as getting a new shade or fixture or as complicated as installing a whole new lighting system.

Add Slipcovers to Chairs

If you love your chairs and they're comfortable a quick and simple way to update thistle and match the room decor is to get some slipcovers! Whether it is over the whole chair for a French country cottage look or just over the cushion part to match your table runner, this can make a huge difference to the overall look of the room.

Add Dining Themed Art

Whether you fancy a gallery wall, a set of matching prints or an eclectic mix, the art you choose for your walls can bring the whole look together.

If it's a kitchen dining area you could choose food related prints either in neutral shades (such as black & white) or in colours to match some other aspect of the room.

If you are styling a separate dining room you could choose some wine related art (that's always popular!). Depending on the size of the wall space, it could be one single print or a few. (Sign up below to get a free wine print worth $30!)

Personalise the Space

There are so many ways to do this, but here are a couple of ideas:

1. A grouping of family photos

2. A collection of some vintage books that you love

3. If you have shelves or a sideboard decorate them with just a few select pieces that you collect when you travel.

4. A favourite quote or music lyric art print, either on the wall or a side table.

Eclectic Vintage Mixing

Not everything has to match! Consider collecting vintage tableware, plates, cutlery etc and having a lovely mis matched but beautifully vintage table. This can be a fun ongoing project as you can pick up new items wherever you go and whenever you see an antique shop or vintage fair, or even browsing though sites such as eBay or Etsy!
